the state has been on alert all day. nbc's miguel almaguer starts us off with that tonight from l.a. outside the heavily defended lapd headquarters. miguel, good evening. >> reporter: brian, good evening. tonight police headquarters is a fortress. some officers are armed with shotguns in addition to their side arms. the lapd says they're under attack by a man targeting law enforcement officers. 33-year-old christopher dorner is an accused cop killer who says he won't stop the killing until he's dead. tonight, thousands of police officers are hunting for a man that used to be one of their own. tactical teams spread across nine counties in southern california. >> of course he knows what he's doing. we trained him. >> reporter: he's heavily armed and extremely dangerous. police say former lapd officer christopher dorner has already killed three, and is gunning for more. >> this has gone far enough. nobody else needs to die. >> reporter: fired from the force in 2009 for allegedly making false statements, dorner says his dismissal was unjust. police say he names those he's targeting in

wintry weather. we're looking at mostly rain, a system for us that will start as rain around 2:00 to 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. mostly rain for us, but we can't at the tail end of this system when it starts making its way out of the area, we could see gusts up to 50 miles an hour. as far as areas around new york city, they could get upwards of a foot of snow. snow and wind as the system gets off the coast and really starts affecting the northeast. in new england it's a full-out blizzard with 1 to 2 feet of snowfall. you're looking at the start times here. for us, it's friday morning as rain. for areas around new york, it's friday early afternoon. they by friday evening, up into eastern new england. again, significant travel delays for the northeast, probably all out coming to a spot in areas. so just a newsens storm for us, but a full-out blizzard with high winds, a lot of snow, and big-time snow drifts occurring throughout areas of new england. it's not just one storm, but two storms. area of low pressure down to the south. another area of low pressure off to the west around chicago,

of a deal is this? >> this is a big deal for us. this is what it's all about. >> reporter: general manager vero piacentini says his resort got just eight inches of snow last year. that forced them to spend $250,000 on snow making. >> you go into last year where , you know, we were just scraping it all together trying to keep the ski area open. and then you get into a year like this where it doesn't get any better right now. >> reporter: the low snowfall has been a brief respite for battered city and state budgets. last winter low snow totals saved providence, rhode island, $1.2 million. in manchester, new hampshire $636,000. and boston saved more than $11 million. much of the savings were put back into other city services. and, scott with forecasters predicting up to 30 inches of snow here, schools have already been closed tomorrow, and the airport here, the main airport logan, has been closed. it will be closed tomorrow afternoon and remain closed through the day on saturday. >> pelley: terrell, thank you. the next big story of the day, three people are dead, and a massive manhunt is on.

and police say he has access to multiple weapons and assault rifles. cnn's kyung lah is joining us from los angeles where the police chief is calling it extremely worry some and scare ree. what's the latest kyung? >> reporter: certainly scary for anyone connected to the police department in southern california. this is where today's shooting spree began but all of this, wolf, began earlier this week. the murder spree began on sunday with the double killing of a newly engaged couple, monica quan and keith lawrence, quan, the daughter of a retired lapd captain, the officer who represented christopher dorner in front of the police board that eventually fired him. dorner refers to quan's murder in his man guess stow. he writes, i never had the opportunity to have a family of my own. i'm terminating yours. self-preservation is no longer important to me. i do not fear death as i died long ago on january 2nd of '09, a date a few month after dorner was fired as a police officer. the lapd fanned out, launching 40 protection details throughout southern california. >> lapd is the specific target but a
